Red Admiral nectar: tree sap

I was strolling through Candie Gardens in Guernsey a couple of weeks ago and I spotted a little butterfly frenzy. At least 10 Red Admirals were hovering around the bark of a tree. I didn’t realise at the time that they were attracted by the sap of the old tree.

I have to admit that I was slightly worried about returning to Herm Island after a gap of 20 years or so. I’d wondered whether the island would still be as lovely and unspoilt as I’d remembered. I’d also worried that I’d exaggerated its beauty and tranquillity over the years but there was no cause for concern. The secret place is still special!

Buggingham Pallets vs Buckingham Palace

Herm Island in the Channel Islands where schoolchildren have created bug hotels for wildlife and the grandeur of Buckingham Palace in London. Both destinations visited last week.
